Sleeping
Three suites, each with its own bathroom.
Nobody waits for a shower at seven in the morning. The master sits under a ceiling of faceted oak, lit from behind along its lower edge. The third is up under the eaves, with a dormer looking out over the rooftops of Annecy.
Heat
Cedar, stone, and time that belongs to no one else.
A private sauna off the master suite, lined in cedar, with HUUM stones that come up to heat while you are still deciding whether to bother. Not a shared room downstairs with a rota on the door, and no hour booked in anyone else's diary: yours, on the same floor as the bed, for as long as you want it.

The lake fills every window from the sofa. We stopped drawing the blinds at night simply to wake up to it.
We walked to the old town for every meal, and to Pont des Amours most evenings. Two minutes, exactly as promised.
Lola had the fridge stocked and a table booked before we landed. We simply arrived and unpacked.
The whole top floor is yours, the lake fills every window, and nobody is above you or beside you. Mornings on the terrace, evenings with the mountains going pink. We have rented a great many places. There is nothing like this one.
Semnoz was twenty-five minutes each way. Back at the apartment we were in the lake by mid-afternoon. Hard to beat in March.
Top floor, nobody above and nobody across the hall. The first holiday in years where no one woke the children.
Better value than the platforms, and we had a real person to text when the cot needed setting up.
We ate every dinner outside with La Tournette turning pink behind the glasses. It seats eight without crowding.
They undersell the ceiling height and the light. By nine in the morning the whole apartment is lit from the lake.
August in the Alps can be hot, and every other place we have stayed just moved the warm air around. The air conditioning here is powerful and runs room by room. We came in from the lake at thirty degrees and the penthouse was blissfully cool.
We timed it. Palais de l'Ile in under three minutes from the front door, market included.
Board games in the lounge, paddleboards on the beach across the street, croissants from the bakery downstairs. The easiest family week we have had.
Expensive, and worth it. The kind of place that makes the rest of your rentals look ordinary.
We landed at six and were swimming by seven. Genuinely that close, and worlds away from the airport.
We asked Lola to hold the same week next August while we were still packing the car.

A local Savoie wine worth opening on the terrace, fruit for the first morning, sparkling water drawn from the Haute-Savoie mountains, and a small surprise for the children. Every guest receives one, with no request required.
By air. Geneva Airport is forty minutes by car. Lyon-Saint-Exupery is an hour and a half.
By private jet. Annecy Mont-Blanc (LFLP) is twelve minutes from the door. It is a designated French border crossing point, so arrivals from outside the EU and the Schengen Area clear here too.
By train. A direct TGV from Paris takes three hours forty-five, and regional rail from Geneva an hour and ten, both into Annecy station, then a twelve-minute walk along the lake.
By bus. FlixBus and Ouibus run direct from Geneva in about an hour and from Lyon in two, to the bus station beside the railway station.
By car. Forty minutes from Geneva on the A41, an hour and a half from Lyon.
Parking. Two private spaces on site, one with an electric charger.
Q:How many guests does the penthouse sleep?
A:Up to six guests. Babies under two are welcome in addition and travel cots can be arranged before you arrive.
Q:How many bedrooms and bathrooms does the penthouse have?
A:Three bedrooms, each with its own en suite bathroom, and a separate guest cloakroom in addition.
Q:Is there a beach nearby, and can we do watersports?
A:Plage des Marquisats, the town beach on Lake Annecy, is directly across the street. Waterski Club is five minutes away by bike and offers waterskiing, wakeboarding, wake surfing and baby ski.
Q:What are the check-in and check-out times?
A:Check-in is from 4pm and check-out is at 11am. Both are flexible on request, and your concierge will confirm before you travel.
Q:Is there a minimum stay?
A:Three nights for most of the year, and seven nights in July and August.
Q:Can you arrange a private chef?
A:Yes. Your concierge can book a private chef to cook in the penthouse, for a single dinner or for every evening of your stay. The kitchen is built for it. A chef is charged separately from the rental and quoted before you confirm.
Q:How do I get the best rate?

The owners went looking for the best architects in France, and every road led to ScèneDeVie, here in Annecy. Fifteen years in the town, and a practice whose work is the chalets, hotels and restaurants of Haute-Savoie and the Alps.
Annecy is the Venice of the Alps: canals, arcades, flowers on every bridge, and few towns like it anywhere on earth. Rarer still is a penthouse on its lake.
